Jacques Hartzenberg

Professional hunter and Outfitter, Jacques Hartzenberg is the owner of Chapungu Safaris Africa. Born in South Africa, Jacques was very young when he started showing a keen interest in animals and particularly wild life. At the age of just 14 years old, Jacques was entrusted with his own and first, single-shot .22 rifle.

Jacques early pursuits on an uncle’s farm, kept Jacques very busy with hunting guinea fowls and it was during these times that he perfected his gun handling skills. He became very familiar with dangerous game while hunting smaller game with a few good friends and work colleagues on a few occasions in the Eastern and Northern Cape.

They hunted with experienced local trackers; expert hunters in their own right who would pursue even the largest game species. It was in this time that his passion for hunting was sparked.

It was here that Jacques spent most of his time refining his skills, learning, researching, but also getting very involved and very active in the game farming and hunting industries. He started to build up serious connections and contacts, knowing that he would need these in future.

Jacques has always been inspired by other’s experiences, their stories and made it his business to read about all the well-known hunters and their hunting experiences. Like all great hunters of bygone days, Jacques thinks like the animal he is hunting. He is very passionate and involved in his businesses. He believes in surrounding himself with a very competent team of staff and experts and he believes in hands-on-management.

After growing the business significantly and building up a huge local and international client base, Clifton (in Graaff Reinet) was bought in 2009 and he also invested and bought a stake in the largest privately owned game reserves in SA Kalahari Oryx (in the Northern Cape) in 2005.

Jacques is a very passionate family man and now permanently resides on his family farm ‘Clifton’ with his wife Sonja and their two young sons: Jéan (6 years old) and Liam (2 years old). They are expecting a new addition to the family (a Baby sister) in March 2013. Although Jacques travels extensively, he ensures that when he is back on the farm, that he spends quality time with his wife Sonja and their two boys. They love the farm and the outdoors, so they spend many hours driving around on the farm, they walk, they swim in the rivers and streams, they hold picnics and they even drive around at night. Sonja runs the Clifton Guest Manor and is a full time mom to their two boys, but also manages the orphan wild animals as well as a house full of domestic animals, takes care of the gardens and has a huge vegetable tunnel – her pride and joy. Kalahari Oryx Game Reserve

A rare South African ‘gem’ 150 000 acres in the Northern Cape. The Kalahari Desert is part of the huge red sand basin that reaches from the Orange River up to Angola, in the west to Namibia and in the east to Zimbabwe. The erosion of soft stone formations created the sand masses. The wind shaped the sand ridges, which are typical of the landscape in the Kalahari. The dominant vegetation: grasses, thorny shrubs and Acacia trees, can survive long drought periods of more than ten months every year.

Four of the Big Five can be found roaming the landscape, including White as well as Black rhino, lion, leopard, and buffalo. Apart from other plains game, sable, roan and nyala can be found. The reserve boasts with a luxurious Five Star lodge as well as its own airfield. Kalahari Oryx remains an icon of African hunting.
